Attendance Policy
Fort Lupton High School Attendance Process/Policy
Lack of Attendance
JEA Compulsory Attendance Age is defined, by the state of Colorado, as every child who has attained the age of 7 years and is under the age of 17.
Consequences for lack of attendance or excessive tardies may include: lunch detention, suspension, community service, etc. Schools can withdraw/fail a student from class after ten (10) consecutive days of absences, attendance contracts and/or truancy court proceedings. Students
who are habitually truant may also be administratively withdrawn if 17 years of age or older. Excessive absences may also result in teacher recommendation for withdrawal from class where the student is habitually truant.
Below is the FLHS “Attendance Process and Procedures” regarding a student’s lack of attendance (absences):
● The attendance team, consisting of assistant principals, counselors and/or the attendance clerk, will review attendance reports and the assistant principal, or their designee, will have face-to-face conversations with each student who has missed 42 class periods (equivalent to 6 days of school).
● The student will be required to attend a 4-hour Saturday School session (combination of community service and/or study hall). Community service will be performed at the high school during Saturday School.
● Contact, with parents/guardians, is also made to inform families that their student(s) are required to attend Saturday School. If a student fails to attend Saturday School, an additional Saturday School will be required (two Saturday School sessions). If students fail to attend both Saturday School sessions, they will be required to serve two days of in-school suspension (ISS).
● Students have 4 weeks to improve their attendance to avoid being placed on an attendance contract. Students' attendance must not reach 70 period absences (equivalent to 10 days of school).
● Students, whose attendance has reached 70 period absences, will meet, along with parents/guardians, with the attendance team to discuss any barriers (or excuses) that keep our students from coming to school. Parents/guardians and students will complete a Pre-Conference Survey prior to the attendance meeting. Students will be placed on an Attendance Contract during the meeting and will be required to attend an additional Saturday School session. If a student fails to attend Saturday School, an additional Saturday School will be required (two Saturday School sessions).
● If a student's attendance improves, the school notifies the student and their parents/guardians that they are doing well and attendance will continue to be monitored every 4 weeks. If attendance did not improve, students and parents/guardians will be notified that Fort Lupton High School will file a truancy case with Weld County Court.
