FLHS Mock Trial

Mock Trial is run through the Colorado Bar Association in connection with the National Mock Trial Competition. Students begin meeting in August and until November, learn basic criminal justice, legal, and court room structure, organization, and more importantly, how both Prosecution and Defense Team create their cases that are heard before trial judges. In November, CBA releases the Mock Trial Case, and thus begins the fun. Team are split into three Prosecution lawyers and three Defense lawyers, as well has three witnesses per team, and time keepers. From November to February, students begin formulating their Opening Statements, Witness Question, Witness Cross Examinations, and Closing Arguments. In February Regional Competitions are held in County Courtrooms across Colorado. here students, split into Prosecution and Witness Teams, face off against other school arguing their cases. From as many as twenty school, the top three performing teams are chosen, and those teams compete and the State Competition with the opportunity to go to the National Mock Trial Competition.

FLHS Mock Trial began in 2009, however with such small numbers, we were unable to compete at regionals. In 2010 we competed at our first Regional Competition in Brighton, CO, coming in last place. In 2011, with the addition of Local Fort Lupton Attorney John Dent acting as our Attorney Coach,  we competed at our Second Regional Competition in Fort Collins Colorado, and came in 8th Place out of Fourteen Teams. In 2012 we competed at our third Regional Competition in Greeley, CO, and came if 4th place out of 17 teams, and made the final rounds for the first time. Since then we have made it to the finals and are hoping to reach state soon. It is because of continued interest and advancement in Regional Competitions, Weld RE-8 officially sanctioned FLHS Mock Trial as a Academic Club, which now makes students who compete eligible for Academic Letters. Though the road has been long and difficult, with the help of dedicated students and our volunteer coaches FLHS Mock Trial is looking forward to making it to the Colorado State Mock Trial Competition and eventually, Nationals.
