Principal's Corner

May Newsletter

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to May, our final month of this school year.  As the year comes to a close, I would like to thank you all for your support in your child’s education.  Research shows that when families are involved in their children’s learning both at home and at school, their children do better in school.

The month of May brings many celebrations and school activities for our students and community.  May 4th, high school art students will host an art show in the high school commons from 4:00-6:00 p.m.  May 5th our combined Mother’s Day and Cinco de Mayo celebration with dinner and dance performances, will begin at 6:00 p.m.  May 17th we will have an Honor Roll Breakfast and all school awards assembly in the gym beginning at 8:00 a.m.  May 24th the senior capping ceremony will begin at 3:00 p.m, followed by dinner and a scholarship awards ceremony.  Reservations for the dinner can be made through Debra Oliver in the main office.

May also brings the ending to some important assessments.  AP tests will be conducted from May 1st through May 10th.  Classroom finals will be held May 17th through 19th.  Please encourage your child to prepare for these exams by studying a little each night, beginning at least two weeks before exam day.  AP classes will be conducting practice tests as well to help prepare students.

All Edgenuity classes must be complete by 4:00 p.m on Friday, May 19th, in order to receive credit for the 2016-17 school year.

The last day of school for all students is May 19th.  School will be in session all day on the 19th, with the 7th hour final in the morning from 8:00-10:13 a.m. and make up finals for the remainder of the school day.  This provides students who may have scheduling conflicts with AP make up tests and finals, the opportunity to make up any exams needed.

High school staff will be busy packing up their classrooms during the month of May, as renovation/construction of B and C hallways, as well as the Tech Lab area will begin on May 20th.  We are excited to return to school next August with some newly remodeled classrooms.  This will be phase one of a three phase renovation schedule.

Looking ahead to Fall, registration dates are set for August 7th from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and 1:00p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and August 8th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

I truly enjoyed my first year as Principal with the amazing students at FLHS.  I look forward to expanding the course offerings and pathways at the school, and will continue to focus on preparing our students for success after high school.

Enjoy your summer break and thank you for all you do,

Marcia Hester
