January Newsletter

Dear FLHS Families,

I sincerely hope you all enjoyed your holiday season with friends and family, and I wish you all a prosperous new year.  School resumes on Tuesday, January 9th for students.  Students can access their second semester schedule on infinite campus.   If your student has an error on their schedule, they should see their counselor in the counseling office on Tuesday upon return to school.  Late start Mondays will resume on January 22nd, and there is no school on Monday, January 15th in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The month of January brings with it ACCESS testing for students identified as English Language Learners (ELL).  This testing will be conducted during the time frame of January 16th through February 9th.  It measures English proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening.  Once an ELL student reaches a score of Full English Proficiency or FEP, they will be exempt from further testing.  Results from this assessment are used to place students into an appropriate level ELL course, for support.

On Monday, January 22nd at 8:00am in the high school gymnasium, we will host the first semester honor roll breakfast for students achieving a 3.0 GPA or higher during first semester.  Students and parents qualifying for this award will be sent an invitation to the breakfast the week of January 16th.

Class registration talks with students will be conducted January 29th through February 2nd.  During these talks, students will be given a course registration guide along with necessary paperwork and directions on how to register for courses for the upcoming 2018-19 school year.  Registration will begin February 2nd and end February 15th.  Students will be guided through the registration process in their core content area classes during the registration window.  We highly encourage students to take the registration guide home and share it with parents in order to make a course plan before the February 2nd registration window opens.  If you have any questions on courses needed specific to your student’s graduation credit requirements, please contact the registrar’s office to make an appointment with your student’s counselor 303-857-7119.

As a school-wide emphasis on improving student achievement, some of the work teachers and administrators will be focusing on this semester include having students process information daily through reading, writing, speaking and listening, identifying what students should know and be able to demonstrate up front, then using formative assessments daily in classes to monitor the learning of students and drive further instruction, and finally, implementing literacy strategies in all classes.

Parents can help support school initiatives by talking with your student about what they are reading, writing, how they had to speak or listen to a partner to process information, asking what they learned today at school, and providing opportunities for their student to read, write, speak and listen at home.  Parents can monitor student grades and completion of classwork through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.  Please contact Marisol Zito in the registrar’s office to obtain login information at 303-857-7119.

Thank you for all you do to support our students.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy 2018 year,

Marcia Hester
